Young Architects Competition 2019/2020: Kiribati Floating Homestead

Whilst at Box Architects I was selected to be a part of the competition team. We entered a competition proposed by the Young Architects Competitions; more specifically, the Kiribati Floating House Competition. Centred around the Kiribati archipelagos, the aim was to ensure that the existing population of the islands were able to continue their way of life - and not be forced to leave their ancestral home. Our proposal would therefore be “Still Kiribati”.

One of the critical focuses of our approach was to be as resourceful as possible, employing as many materials and technologies that already existed on the island to the proposal without introducing infeasible means for the people of Kiribati. During our design process we had access to a key insight, as a client of the company had lived in Kiribati for a number of years and his wife was a native; this heavily influenced our proposals. Their advice, along with meticulous research, led to this resolution.
